MILITARY ROLLS OUT ANTI-ATTACK MEASURES FOR CHRISTMAS

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that extensive security measures are in place to prevent attacks and ensure safety during the Christmas season across Nigeria.

In a statement on Sunday, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Michael Onoja, said the Armed Forces, in coordination with other security agencies, have intensified operations in areas identified as high-risk.

“The DHQ wishes to assure the public that robust and proactive steps have been implemented to prevent any attacks during the Christmas festivities. Additional troops have been deployed to strategic locations, while special forces units and air support elements remain on high alert to ensure rapid response capability,” the statement partly read.

Onoja explained that surveillance efforts, including aerial monitoring and intelligence gathering, have been strengthened to track the movements and communications of suspected criminal groups. Unit commanders have also been instructed to increase patrols, set up fortified checkpoints, and maintain close coordination with community leaders, local vigilante groups, and state security formations.

“The Armed Forces remain committed to protecting lives and property. National security and stability are a top priority as Nigerians prepare to celebrate,” he added.

He further urged public cooperation, highlighting the importance of vigilance and the prompt reporting of suspicious activities. “Citizens’ cooperation is crucial for national security. All reports will be treated urgently and confidentially. We call on residents to stay calm yet vigilant and immediately report any suspicious behaviour to the nearest security formation,” Onoja said.

He also conveyed Christmas and New Year greetings from the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. O.O. Oluyede, and encouraged wide circulation of the advisory to the public.

In a similar move, the Rivers State Police Command announced reinforced security arrangements for the festive season. Spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko stated that tactical units have been deployed to waterways, recreational centres, and other identified hotspots as part of a comprehensive security strategy.

“The Rivers State Police Command has launched proactive measures to ensure a peaceful and secure Yuletide season. This includes collaboration with sister security agencies to maintain law and order across the state,” the statement read.

Iringe-Koko added that Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju has instructed area commanders and divisional officers to ensure strategic deployments in partnership with stakeholders to guarantee safe and orderly celebrations. “Tactical teams are positioned at key locations, including entry and exit points, waterways, motor parks, hotels, recreation centres, churches, mosques, and other hotspots. This deployment aims to provide visible policing, improve surveillance, and enable rapid response to potential security threats,” she said.

The police command emphasized community engagement, working closely with traditional rulers, youth groups, and religious leaders to foster trust, encourage early intelligence sharing, and prevent incidents during the holiday period. Residents were advised to take personal safety measures, such as securing homes, supervising children to prevent accidents with fireworks, and reporting any suspicious activity immediately.
