MILITARY ARRESTS SUICIDE BOMBER, RECOVERS 189 AK-47 RIFLES

Troops operating under Operation Hadin Kai have achieved a significant security breakthrough in Borno State, arresting a suspected suicide bomber and confiscating materials intended for making Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

The suspect, identified as Abubakar Mustapha, was apprehended on Monday by personnel of the 152 Task Force Battalion, working alongside other security agencies, in Banki town, Bama Local Government Area.

Lt. Col. Sani Uba, Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force North-East, revealed that Mustapha was found with primed IED components, signaling plans for an imminent attack.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect is from Bama Local Government Area. Additional materials linked to terrorist activities were also recovered. He is currently undergoing detailed interrogation to uncover his sponsors, collaborators, and connections with terrorist networks in the region,” he said.

In a related operation along the Cameroon–Nigeria border, troops intercepted a Peugeot vehicle carrying six bags of urea fertiliser, a known precursor for IED production. Further intelligence led to the arrest of the fertiliser dealer and the recovery of an additional six bags, bringing the total seizure to twelve bags.

“Both the vehicle and the fertiliser were secured by military forces. All suspects and recovered items are in custody for further investigation and legal proceedings,” Sani added.

The military reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the North-East, vowing to deny terrorists freedom of movement.

“Troops of JTF NE OPHK continue to dominate their areas of responsibility through intelligence-led operations, aggressive patrols, and sustained presence to prevent attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure by JAS/ISWAP terrorists,” he stated.

Operations in the North-West

In the North-West, the Nigerian Army also reported major successes under Operation Fasanyama.

The 8 Division, Sector 2, said troops recovered 189 AK-47 rifles, thousands of rounds of ammunition, and other criminal assets, while rescuing 1,023 kidnapped victims during sustained operations across Sokoto, Katsina, Kebbi, and Zamfara States.

Speaking at the 2025 Combined West African Social Activities (WASA) at the Division headquarters, the General Officer Commanding highlighted that the operations neutralized several bandit leaders, dismantled terrorist camps, and significantly reduced attacks.

“These operations have restored community confidence and boosted economic activity, as farmers and traders can now access areas that were previously unsafe,” the GOC said. He also noted that special task units capable of precision strike-and-destroy missions have strengthened operational capacity.

Efforts to enhance troop welfare and infrastructure included upgrades to medical facilities, recruitment of additional health personnel, and renovation of accommodation blocks.

“The Nigerian Army remains committed to consolidating gains, building a professional, combat-ready, and resilient force. Personnel are urged to remain disciplined, vigilant, and security-conscious,” he added.

The WASA event, a tradition since 1901 promoting unity and cultural integration among West African soldiers, was attended by the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, Sokoto State Government representatives, and other traditional leaders.
