NIGERIAN SOCIETY OF ANAESTHETISTS BREAKS SILENCE OVER CHIMAMANDA’S SON’S DEATH

The Nigerian Society of Anaesthetists (NSA) has stated that it is closely observing allegations of medical negligence linked to the death of Nkanu, the 21-month-old son of renowned writer Chimamanda Adichie.

The National President of the Society, Professor Alhassan Mohammed, disclosed this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Saturday.

According to NAN, a statement released by the family confirmed that the toddler, Nkanu Nnamdi — born to Chimamanda Adichie and her husband, Dr Ivara Esege — passed away on January 7 after a short illness.

The family statement, issued through GLG Communications by Omawumi Ogbe, described the loss as devastating and appealed to the public to respect their privacy during the period of mourning.

However, days after the announcement, reports emerged alleging possible medical negligence at a private hospital in Lagos where the child was reportedly receiving treatment before plans for medical evacuation to the United States.

Speaking on the matter, Professor Mohammed explained that the hospital involved may begin an internal review to establish the facts, including examining both oral testimonies and medical records.

“Every patient has a medical record, either electronic or manual, which can be reviewed and printed if necessary,” he said.

He added that depending on the wishes of the child’s mother or family members, an independent investigative panel could also be constituted to further probe the allegations.

Mohammed noted that such an investigation would examine whether the medical personnel and facility involved were properly registered, adhered to approved medical practices and protocols, and whether negligence played any role in the incident.

He stressed that the NSA is awaiting additional details before making further comments on the matter.
