ATIKU BREAKS SILENCE AS SON, ABBA, JOINS APC

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reacted to his son Abba Abubakar’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), making it clear that the move was a personal decision and not influenced by family or political pressure.

In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Atiku said his son’s choice reflects the freedom allowed in a democratic system, even when politics and family intersect.

“The decision of my son, Abba Abubakar, to join the APC is entirely personal. In a democracy, such choices are neither unusual nor alarming.”

NO COERCION, EVEN WITHIN FAMILY

The former PDP presidential candidate emphasised his long-standing democratic values, stressing that he does not force political beliefs on anyone — including his children.

“As a democrat, I do not coerce my own children in matters of conscience, and I certainly will not coerce Nigerians.”

ATIKU SHIFTS FOCUS TO GOVERNANCE

While acknowledging his son’s decision, Atiku redirected attention to what he described as the failures of the ruling APC, blaming the party for Nigeria’s current economic and social challenges.

According to him, the real issue is not political defections, but the hardships Nigerians continue to face under APC leadership.

“What truly concerns me is the poor governance of the APC and the severe economic and social hardships it has imposed on our people.”

A BRIEF POLITICAL BACKSTORY

Atiku Abubakar is no stranger to party switches in Nigeria’s fluid political landscape. A former Vice President, he has moved between major parties over the years, including the PDP and APC, before returning to opposition politics.

After contesting the 2023 presidential election, Atiku exited the PDP in November 2025 and aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, positioning himself and allied forces to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s expected re-election bid in 2027.

LOOKING AHEAD

Atiku reaffirmed his commitment to working with “like-minded patriots” to present Nigerians with what he called a credible alternative focused on relief, hope, and progress.
