Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd), has explained that the presence of United States (U.S.) military personnel in the country is strictly for training and technological support.
Speaking in Abuja, Musa said the collaboration is limited to specific areas, including Bauchi State, where Nigerian and U.S. forces are working together to enhance operational capabilities. He stressed that the federal government approved their presence for these purposes.

“They are here to assist with training and technology. The U.S. has advanced capabilities such as drones and satellite systems, which are critical in our fight against terrorism,” he stated.
The minister emphasized that such international collaboration is standard practice, citing similar partnerships in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, and Burma. Musa linked the need for external support to the growing security challenges in the Sahel region, noting the influx of arms and militants following Libya’s destabilization.
He reassured Nigerians that the partnership is temporary and guided by a formal agreement, emphasizing that the country’s sovereignty is fully respected.

U.S. Forces Arrive in Bauchi
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) confirmed the arrival of about 100 U.S. military personnel and associated equipment at Bauchi Airfield. The deployment follows a formal request by the Nigerian government to support defined military training requirements, technical assistance, and intelligence sharing with the Nigerian Armed Forces.

Maj. Gen. Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, stated that the U.S. personnel are serving purely in an advisory and training role, and are not engaged in combat. All activities will be conducted under the authority and coordination of Nigerian military command.

Joint training and intelligence-sharing initiatives are intended to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to identify and neutralize extremist groups threatening national security. The DHQ assured the public of continued transparency regarding the cooperation, affirming the Armed Forces’ commitment to safeguarding the country and its citizens.
