‘IT IS NOT THEIR PRIORITY’: ZAMFARA GOVERNOR CLAIMS MILITARY, POLICE DOWNPLAY REPORTS ON BANDIT MOVEMENTS

Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has expressed deep concern over what he describes as a lack of urgency by security agencies in addressing insecurity, claiming that actionable intelligence is often ignored.

In an interview, the governor highlighted that modern technology—including satellites and drones—allows real-time tracking of bandits’ movements, which is shared with the police, military, DSS, and civil defence. “Every movement is communicated to all the relevant security operators, but it is not their priority. When you have the tool, you can neutralise these guys easily. How is it difficult?” he questioned.

Lawal said he personally briefed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the situation, insisting that the federal government is not receiving an accurate picture of insecurity in Zamfara and parts of Kaduna. He described the state as having been “very, very serious and dysfunctional,” with persistent attacks predating his administration.

The governor’s remarks come after a recent attack in Moriki town, Zurmi Local Government Area, where armed bandits killed Lauwali Musa Moriki, the LGA Health Educator, and abducted several residents. The incident has intensified fear across rural communities already grappling with recurring assaults. Residents criticised security agencies for failing to act despite prior warnings and distress calls.

Lawal warned that unless security agencies prioritise actionable intelligence, the ongoing banditry and killings could continue to undermine peace in Zamfara and neighbouring Kaduna State.
