MZOUGH U TIV has raised alarm over a potential humanitarian disaster in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps located in Tor Damsa, Chanchanji, and Amadu areas of southern Taraba State.
Professor Hemen Agere, president of the group’s Taraba State chapter, told journalists on Wednesday that Tiv communities in the Southern Senatorial District have faced sustained attacks since September 2025. He blamed armed Fulani militias for coordinated assaults on farming communities, leading to widespread destruction, displacement, and loss of life.

According to the group, at least 300 Tiv people have been killed in the past five months, while around 50,000 residents have been displaced from Chanchanji, Akete Ward in Takum, and parts of Donga Local Government Area. Over 100 villages and 12 church buildings belonging to NKST and the Roman Catholic Church have reportedly been destroyed.

Professor Agere noted that displaced farmers in Takum and Donga were forced to abandon unharvested crops, with some attempts to return resulting in further attacks and fatalities.
Mzough U Tiv criticised the government’s response to the crisis as inadequate, urging Governor Agbu Kefas, in his role as Chief Security Officer of the state, to visit affected areas, sympathise with victims, and restore hope. The group also called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to intervene urgently to prevent a worsening humanitarian situation.

The organisation warned of high malnutrition risks in the IDP camps, especially with changing weather patterns and the approaching rainy season. It further appealed to federal and state authorities to strengthen security operations to enable displaced persons to return safely and resume their livelihoods, noting that prolonged displacement could hinder participation in the ongoing voter registration review.

Mzough U Tiv also urged humanitarian organisations, civil society groups, and well-meaning individuals to provide both material and psychosocial support to victims of the crisis.
