A massive fire outbreak has engulfed the old terminal building at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, causing widespread panic among passengers, staff, and airport users.
The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Monday, February 23, 2026.

The affected terminal is currently under reconstruction by the Federal Government.
FAAN Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, confirmed the fire and stated that firefighters from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) are actively responding and working to contain the blaze.
“No loss of life has been recorded,” Agbebire said. “Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.”
The cause of the inferno has not yet been ascertained, though initial reports suggest it may be linked to ongoing construction work or an electrical fault.

Video footage circulating online shows thick black smoke billowing from the structure, with emergency response teams on the ground.
This is the second major fire-related incident at the international wing of the airport in recent years. On September 6, 2023, a suspected electrical spark at the baggage hall ceiling caused a smoke incident in Terminal 1, leading to temporary disruptions.

Airport operations have not been officially suspended, but passengers are advised to expect delays and follow updates from FAAN and airline operators.
Investigations are expected to commence once the fire is fully brought under control.
