NIGERIAN POLICE CONFIRM HOODLUMS DISRUPTED ADC EVENT IN BENIN, INVESTIGATE GUNSHOTS AT OYEGUN’S RESIDENCE

The Edo State Police Command has confirmed two separate incidents of unrest that disrupted political activities of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Benin City on Tuesday, February 24, 2026.

In a statement issued by Police Public Relations Officer ASP Eno Ikoedem, the Command said suspected hoodlums infiltrated a political gathering at the ADC State Secretariat located at Ogbelaka Street, off Sapele Road, Benin City, around 2:55 p.m.

The disturbance occurred shortly after the official conclusion of the event, when most dignitaries had already departed the venue.

“The hoodlums were said to have caused commotion, chased members away and threw the furniture at the venue upside down,” the statement read.

“Plastic chairs and canopies that were arranged and kept on the road outside the premises of the secretariat for the event were vandalised and damaged.”

Police patrol teams responded swiftly to a distress call, but the attackers fled upon sighting operatives. No deaths were recorded, though one woman sustained injuries during the ensuing stampede. She received prompt treatment at a nearby chemist and has since been discharged.

In a related incident, at about 3:48 p.m., the Command received a distress report of gunshots at the residence of ADC State Chairman and former Edo State Governor, Chief John Odigie Oyegun.

Upon arrival, officers observed signs of malicious damage, including two rear windscreens and body parts of vehicles parked outside the residence. No casualties were recorded at the residence.

Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika has ordered a full-scale investigation into both incidents, with directives to identify, apprehend, and prosecute those responsible.

“The Command reiterates its commitment to ensuring adequate security for all political stakeholders, irrespective of party affiliation, and warns that acts of political violence will not be tolerated under any guise,” the statement said.

The police urged residents to remain calm, provide credible information to aid investigations, and cooperate with security agencies.

Political party leaders have been invited to a meeting with the Commissioner of Police to discuss measures for ensuring peaceful political activities in the state going forward.
