SOUTH-SOUTH ADC ENDORSES AMAECHI AHEAD OF OBI, OTHERS.

Former Edo State governor, John Odigie-Oyegun, has announced that leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the South-South region have thrown their support behind Rotimi Amaechi for the 2027 presidential election, ahead of other aspirants including former Anambra governor, Peter Obi.

Odigie-Oyegun revealed this during the ADC South-South leaders’ consultative meeting in Benin City, stating that Amaechi formally presented his intention to contest the presidency and received unanimous backing from stakeholders in the zone.

“We are pleased that our son, Rotimi Amaechi, briefed us personally about his plan to run for the presidency,” Odigie-Oyegun said. “We appreciate his respect for the leaders of the zone, and a unanimous decision was taken to offer him full support in his ambition. This group of leaders will continue to meet regularly to share experiences, setting an example for other regions.”

Amaechi, who previously sought the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2022 but lost to President Bola Tinubu, had earlier in 2025 declared his willingness to serve a single term if elected on the ADC platform. He has consistently advocated for a southern candidate to maintain the principle of power rotation, arguing that presenting a northern candidate could reduce the party’s influence in the South.

Other prominent figures, including former vice president Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, have also expressed interest in the ADC ticket for the 2027 elections.
