The National Police Council has formally confirmed Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police.
The confirmation took place during a meeting of the council convened by President Bola Tinubu on Monday, March 2, 2026, at the State House, Abuja.
The meeting, which lasted about 40 minutes, was held in compliance with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, which requires the Police Council to consider the appointment of the IGP.
Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the endorsement in a statement after the session.
“Yes, they have unanimously endorsed Disu as IGP,” Onanuga said.
Following the council’s approval, Disu’s name will now be forwarded by the President to the Senate for screening and confirmation.
The Police Council is chaired by the President and includes all 36 state governors, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, and the Inspector-General of Police.
Those in attendance included Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Head of Civil Service Didi Walson-Jack, and governors of Enugu, Nasarawa, Ogun, Kwara, Plateau, Ondo, and Lagos. The Deputy Governor of Kogi State also attended, along with the Ministers of the Federal Capital Territory, Police Affairs, and Interior.
Disu, aged 59, has been serving in an acting capacity since his appointment on Wednesday following the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun.
Egbetokun cited “family issues” as the reason for his exit. It was gathered that he was summoned to Aso Rock on Monday evening and directed to step down.
The Presidency had earlier stated that the council would be convened shortly after Egbetokun’s resignation to consider Disu’s substantive appointment.
