The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the rollout of a Geographic Information System (GIS)-enabled alphanumeric digital postcode system for Nigeria.
Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Dr. Bosun Tijjani announced the approval in a statement on Wednesday, describing it as a major milestone in the ministry’s strategic blueprint.

The new system, to be implemented in partnership with the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) under Postmaster General/CEO Tola Odeyemi, will replace outdated addressing methods with a modern, geospatially precise framework.

Tijjani explained that the digital postcode system will significantly improve accuracy in mail and parcel delivery nationwide while serving as foundational national infrastructure for broader development goals.

Beyond postal services, it is expected to:
– Strengthen national planning
– Enhance emergency response (e.g., faster ambulance and fire service dispatch)
– Boost logistics and e-commerce efficiency
– Support more effective delivery of government services

“As our digital economy continues to grow, foundational systems such as this play an essential role in building the infrastructure required to connect people, businesses, and services more efficiently across the country,” the minister said.
He added that the approval demonstrates the government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for a modern, inclusive, and globally competitive digital economy.

Postmaster General Odeyemi noted that the concept was first proposed in 2009.
“A digital postcode system is more than a postal reform. It is critical national infrastructure that enables e-commerce, logistics, emergency services, financial inclusion, security, urban planning, and effective public service delivery,” she said.

“By introducing an alphanumeric addressing framework, Nigeria will now be able to identify locations with far greater precision across cities, towns, and rural communities.”
Odeyemi added that the initiative “will significantly improve how goods, services, and digital platforms reach Nigerians everywhere.”
“This milestone reflects a shared commitment by the Federal Government to strengthen Nigeria’s digital backbone and unlock new opportunities for innovation, commerce, and national development,” she concluded.
