Among those who marked the occasion was Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, who stressed that empowering women should not be seen as charity but as a strategic investment in the nation’s future. She noted that providing women with access to education, healthcare, leadership opportunities and economic empowerment would lead to stronger families, thriving communities and a more inclusive country.

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, also praised Nigerian women for their resilience and sacrifices in supporting families and contributing to national progress. He pledged that the National Assembly would continue to support policies aimed at expanding opportunities for women in both economic and political spheres.

Similarly, the Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to programmes that improve women’s access to opportunities and resources. He emphasised that women are critical partners in governance and development, noting that several women have been appointed to key positions in the state.

Financial institution United Bank for Africa also announced plans to host a special edition of its Business Series focused on celebrating and empowering women. The event, themed “Gen W – The Evolved Woman,” will bring together female leaders and professionals to share experiences and strategies for growth in today’s fast-changing environment.

Civil society organisations also used the occasion to push for greater inclusion of women in leadership. The National Association of Seadogs called for increased representation of women in governance, noting that despite their significant contributions to society, women remain underrepresented in political leadership.

In Anambra State, the First Lady, Nonye Soludo, encouraged women to participate more actively in politics and decision-making processes so their voices can shape policies and national development.

Advocacy groups also highlighted challenges facing women. Media Rights Agenda urged government authorities to address barriers limiting women’s access to public information, stating that access to information plays a key role in empowering women and improving their socio-economic status.

The Interim National Chairman of the Labour Party, Nenadi Usman, commended Nigerian women for their dedication and resilience while calling for stronger policies that would enhance women’s participation in leadership and governance.

Other organisations including the International Press Centre and Women Empowerment and Legal Aid also advocated greater protection of women’s rights and the removal of barriers that limit their participation in democratic processes.

State governments and international partners also celebrated the day. In Bauchi State, authorities worked with UNICEF to highlight the importance of education, healthcare and economic support for women as part of efforts to strengthen national development.

Across the country, leaders and organisations agreed that empowering women remains essential for building stronger communities, deepening democracy and ensuring sustainable national progress.
