The event, which celebrates unity and shared values among Commonwealth nations, drew senior government officials, diplomats, youth representatives and figures from the creative industry.

Across the road from the Abbey, campaigners from the Republic staged a protest, waving flags and holding bright yellow placards with messages such as “Abolish the monarchy” and “Down with the crown.” Some demonstrators also shouted questions directed at the King regarding his brother, Prince Andrew.

The protesters gathered at United Nations Green from the morning, and by mid-afternoon dozens had assembled with banners and chants directed at the royal family. However, the noise from church bells and musical performances around the Abbey largely drowned out the protest.

Inside the historic venue, members of the royal family arrived one after another. Catherine, Princess of Wales attended the service wearing a blue outfit and a wide-brimmed hat, while Princess Anne appeared in a green hat. The royal greetings were slightly awkward due to the large hats worn by several attendees, making the usual cheek-kissing greetings difficult.

Prince William and other senior royals joined the procession into the Abbey as the ceremony began with hymns and formal proceedings.

In his Commonwealth Day message, King Charles called on member countries to strengthen cooperation and act as a “force for good” in a world facing numerous challenges. He highlighted global issues such as armed conflicts, climate change and rapid social transformation, urging nations within the Commonwealth to work together in support of their people.

The ceremony also included cultural performances and speeches. Geri Halliwell delivered remarks as an ambassador for the Royal Commonwealth Society, while dancer and presenter Oti Mabuse offered reflections during the programme.

Political leaders, including Keir Starmer, were also expected to attend the gathering alongside diplomats and representatives from Commonwealth countries.
