The inaugural train departed Fujairah on Tuesday morning and arrived at Mohammed Bin Zayed City Station in Abu Dhabi after a journey of approximately 250 kilometres lasting one hour and 45 minutes. The launch marks the start of Etihad Rail’s introductory passenger operations.

Ahead of the official rollout, more than 10,000 tickets were sold, reflecting strong public interest in the new transportation service.

Passengers can enjoy modern onboard amenities, including air conditioning, Wi-Fi, power outlets, reserved seating, and Premium Class services designed to offer greater comfort.

Etihad Rail described the launch as a milestone in the country’s transportation development, providing residents and visitors with a faster and more convenient way to travel between major cities.

The rail network is expected to expand later this year with the opening of stations in Dubai and Al Dhaid on September 30, followed by additional stations in Al Dhafra. The final phase is scheduled for completion by the end of March next year, when the Sharjah station becomes operational.

Ticket prices begin at AED55 for Comfort Class and AED120 for Premium Class. The current fleet consists of 13 trains, each capable of carrying up to 400 passengers.

Once fully completed, the 900-kilometre railway will connect the Gulf of Oman with the Arabian Gulf, extending through several emirates to Ghuweifat on the Saudi Arabian border.

The project forms part of the UAE’s broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions, promote sustainable transportation, and improve nationwide connectivity. Authorities have also integrated the rail service with existing bus, taxi, and other public transport systems to make travel more convenient for passengers.

While the launch has generated significant excitement within the UAE, industry observers say it remains to be seen how much the new rail network will influence international tourism in the years ahead.
