The United States government has announced that the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood will be placed under terrorism sanctions, with the designation set to take effect later this month.

The move, revealed by the U.S. State Department on Monday, is part of Washington’s broader counter-terrorism strategy targeting groups considered a security threat.

Under the plan, the organisation will first be added to a specific terrorism sanctions list, followed by a designation as a foreign terrorist organisation. Once enforced, this will subject the group to financial restrictions and other penalties under U.S. counter-terrorism laws.

Listing as a foreign terrorist organisation also makes it illegal for anyone within the United States to provide support or resources to the group. Authorities noted that the measures are aimed at curbing networks with alleged links to extremist activities. Further details on the implementation of the sanctions were not immediately provided.
