BORDERS OPENED, SECURITY BREACHED: NATIONAL PATRIOTS CALL FOR IMMEDIATE STRATEGIC RESET AHEAD OF UK STATE VISIT

HEADLINENEWS.NEWS | NATIONAL PATRIOTS REPORT

A recent policy position advanced by the National Patriots and published by Headlinenews.news on the urgent need to secure Nigeria’s border communities before reopening land borders appears, in retrospect, to have been overlooked—with troubling consequences now unfolding across parts of the country.

The decision to reopen Nigeria’s borders, though economically sound in principle, was executed without the necessary security architecture to filter inflows of persons, arms, and contraband.

What should have been a calibrated, phased reopening backed by surveillance, intelligence coordination, and border technology has instead exposed critical vulnerabilities.

Across several regions, security reports and field accounts indicate a surge in violent incidents, including banditry, kidnappings, and attacks linked to the proliferation of small arms and light weapons.

Analysts estimate that over 70% of illicit arms circulating in West Africa move through porous borders, a long-standing challenge Nigeria has grappled with due to its extensive land boundaries spanning over 4,000 kilometres.

Historically, Nigeria’s 2019 border closure under the previous administration, though controversial, led to measurable reductions in smuggling and temporarily disrupted illicit arms flows.

However, it also strained trade within ECOWAS and affected livelihoods in border communities.

The lesson was clear: border management must balance economic openness with robust security controls.

In contrast, countries facing similar threats—such as Kenya and Turkey—have invested heavily in integrated border surveillance systems, including drones, biometric entry-exit systems, and real-time intelligence sharing. Nigeria’s current border framework still relies heavily on manual processes, leaving gaps that criminal networks exploit.

The National Patriots note with concern that recent incidents—including reports of stampedes during palliative distributions and rising insecurity in border-adjacent states—reflect a nation under economic and security strain. The situation in Owerri last week, where a distribution exercise reportedly descended into chaos, underscores the desperation within communities—conditions that can be exploited by criminal elements.

While President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s forthcoming state visit to the United Kingdom is commendable and strategically important—especially as it marks what is expected to be the first state visit by a Nigerian leader in nearly four decades—the urgency of domestic security cannot be understated.

The President’s efforts to reposition Nigeria’s global image and attract investment will ultimately depend on investor confidence, which is inseparable from internal stability.

Reports of increased inflow of arms, explosives, and even drone-enabled threats raise serious national security concerns that require immediate, decisive action.

The National Patriots therefore recommend:

Immediate temporary closure of land borders to allow for a comprehensive security reset

Deployment of modern surveillance technology, including drones and smart monitoring systems

Strengthening of inter-agency intelligence coordination across customs, immigration, military, and DSS

Introduction of biometric border controls and digital cargo tracking systems

A strategic review of national security leadership, prioritising deep counterterrorism expertise.

The current trajectory is unsustainable. Daily reports of killings and increasing boldness among terrorist elements signal a dangerous shift that cannot be ignored.

Nigeria stands at a critical crossroads.

Economic openness without security safeguards is a risk the nation can no longer afford. Leadership must act swiftly—not only to protect lives—but to preserve the credibility of the state and secure the future of its people.
