The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has summoned CSP Adetayo Akerele, Chairman of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit (Taskforce), to report to the Force Headquarters over allegations of corruption, extortion, and abuse of power by operatives of the unit.
The move comes amid widespread social media complaints from Lagos residents demanding Akerele’s removal. The allegations, reportedly highlighted in videos circulated online, suggest Taskforce officials engaged in unlawful land-related activities, human rights abuses, and extortion.
A source confirmed that the IGP, who emphasizes professionalism and respect for human rights across the force, is taking the claims seriously as part of ongoing police reforms. “CSP Akerele has been asked to report on Monday. The meeting’s outcome will guide the next steps,” the source said.
Meanwhile, Lagos State Police Commissioner Olohundare Jimoh has warned Taskforce officers against misconduct, emphasizing that anyone found guilty of corruption, extortion, or abuse of power would face strict disciplinary action. He added that the command would not hesitate to dissolve any unit operating outside strategic guidelines.
Jimoh reassured residents that officers proven to have violated citizens’ rights would be prosecuted and encouraged the public to submit credible evidence when filing complaints. He cited a past case where five officers involved in a shooting incident at Owode Onirin Market were arrested and arraigned, underscoring that no officer is above the law.
The commissioner also stated that the Taskforce has been reinforced with newly screened and trained officers, working alongside civil society and human rights groups to ensure higher standards of professionalism. He called on residents to actively support security efforts, noting that public safety is a shared responsibility.
