UK SUMMONS IRANIAN ENVOY OVER ALLEGED SPY PLOT TARGETING JEWISH COMMUNITY

The United Kingdom has summoned Iran’s ambassador to London, Seyed Ali Mousavi, following what the Foreign Office described as Tehran’s “reckless and destabilising actions” both domestically and abroad.

The diplomatic move comes after two individuals, Nematollah Shahsavani, 40, and Alireza Farasati, 22, were charged under the UK’s National Security Act for allegedly assisting a foreign intelligence service. The suspects appeared in a London court last week accused of conducting surveillance targeting members of the Jewish community, including reconnaissance of a synagogue, in coordination with Iranian intelligence, according to prosecutor Louise Attrill.

British security agencies, including MI5, have repeatedly warned of an escalating threat linked to Iran, especially amid tensions involving the United States and Israel.

In a related incident, UK police reported that an Iranian national and a Romanian woman were arrested while attempting to access HM Naval Base Clyde, a high-security facility housing Britain’s Trident nuclear submarines. The Iranian suspect was released pending further investigation, and no immediate charges were filed against the Romanian woman, though the case remains open.

The UK government stressed that the country’s strategic alignment with the US and Israel, including granting American forces access to military bases for defensive operations, could make it a potential target for foreign espionage. Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding national security and vowed to continue identifying and countering foreign threats on British soil.
