President Bola Tinubu has announced that he will donate all salaries earned since assuming office on May 29, 2023, to establish a welfare fund dedicated to supporting injured military personnel and families of fallen soldiers.

The announcement was made on Sunday as part of activities marking his 74th birthday, with the President directing the Accountant-General of the Federation to immediately create a special account for the initiative.

According to available data, the President’s earnings—comprising salary and allowances—could amount to over N120 million across his four-year tenure. Tinubu explained that the funds would serve as seed capital for a programme designed to provide additional support beyond existing military welfare and insurance schemes.

He stated that the initiative is aimed at assisting soldiers who have sustained severe injuries in the line of duty, as well as widows, widowers, and children of personnel who lost their lives while serving the country. The President emphasized that the effort reflects a national responsibility to care for those who have made sacrifices for Nigeria’s security.

Tinubu also called on state governors, lawmakers, private sector players, and well-meaning Nigerians to contribute to the fund, urging collective support for members of the armed forces.
The announcement comes at a time when the military continues to face security challenges across the country, including insurgency in the North-East and banditry in other regions. Many service members have been killed or injured over the years, with concerns often raised about inadequate support for their families.

The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of military personnel and strengthening national security, expressing confidence that Nigeria will overcome its current challenges through unity and sustained effort.
