The Secretary-General of the United Nations has welcomed a two-week ceasefire announced between the United States and Iran, calling it an important step toward easing tensions in the Middle East.
In a statement, the UN chief urged all parties involved in the conflict to act responsibly, comply with international law, and adhere to the terms of the ceasefire to create conditions for a lasting peace. He emphasized the urgent need to protect civilian lives and reduce human suffering, noting the humanitarian imperative behind the UN’s position.
He also expressed appreciation for Pakistan and other nations that helped facilitate the ceasefire and highlighted that his Personal Envoy, Jean Arnault, is in the region to support ongoing peace efforts.
The temporary truce represents a significant diplomatic breakthrough amid rising tensions, with the UN stressing that continued commitment from all sides will be essential to turn the ceasefire into a durable peace agreement.
Earlier, Iran signaled a conditional path toward de-escalation, praising Pakistan’s role in mediating the process. Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi expressed gratitude to Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Munir for their efforts to end hostilities, describing it as a “brotherly request.”
Araghchi confirmed that Iran is considering a framework for negotiations with the United States, referencing both Washington’s 15-point proposal and Iran’s own 10-point proposal as a basis for dialogue. He stressed that Iran’s Armed Forces would halt defensive operations only if attacks against the country stop, underscoring the conditional nature of the ceasefire.
The announcement comes at a time of heightened concern over potential escalation in the region, highlighting the importance of sustained diplomacy to achieve broader stability.
