President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he has decided to extend the ongoing ceasefire with Iran, saying more time is needed for diplomatic negotiations, even as the United States maintains a naval blockade on Iranian ports.
In a post on his social media platform, Trump stated that the ceasefire would remain in place until Iran presents a “clear proposal” to end the tensions. However, he added that the US military has been instructed to continue enforcing the blockade.
The announcement came just hours before the initial ceasefire deadline was expected to expire.
Meanwhile, the White House confirmed that Vice President JD Vance will no longer travel to Pakistan for what was expected to be a second round of peace discussions. A senior official said, “The trip to Pakistan will not be happening today. Any further updates on in-person meetings will be announced by the White House.”
In his remarks, Trump attributed the stalled negotiations to internal divisions within Iran and said Pakistan had also intervened diplomatically.
According to him, Pakistan’s leaders — including Shehbaz Sharif and military chief Asim Munir — requested that the US pause any further military escalation to allow time for Iran to present a unified position.
“Based on the fact that the government of Iran is seriously fractured… and upon the request of Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan, we have been asked to hold our attack on Iran until their leaders can come up with a unified proposal,” Trump wrote.
Despite the diplomatic pause, he insisted that the blockade of Iranian ports around the Strait of Hormuz will continue. He also said US forces remain fully on alert.
The ceasefire extension, he added, will remain in effect until Iran submits a formal proposal and discussions reach a clear conclusion “one way or the other.”
