Google has officially begun construction work on its largest artificial intelligence infrastructure hub outside the United States, marking a major step in its expansion into India’s digital economy.

The project, announced by Google, involves a planned investment of $15 billion over five years to build a massive AI and data centre campus in Visakhapatnam, a coastal city in Andhra Pradesh popularly known as “Vizag.”

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Google’s Vice President for Global Infrastructure, Bikash Koley, described the facility as a key milestone in the company’s push to strengthen global AI infrastructure. He said the centre will support advanced computing needs for AI systems such as Gemini and Google Search.
The project is designed as a full-stack AI ecosystem featuring gigawatt-scale data centre capacity, aimed at handling the growing global demand for artificial intelligence processing and digital storage.

Officials from Andhra Pradesh also welcomed the development. State IT Minister Nara Lokesh said the initiative positions Vizag as a major deep-tech and AI innovation hub.

The location is also expected to serve as an international subsea cable landing point, improving India’s global connectivity through new fibre-optic routes and strengthening its digital infrastructure alongside existing hubs in Mumbai and Chennai.
The expansion reflects the rapid global growth of data centres driven by AI technologies and increasing demand for high-capacity computing systems.
