FUEL CRISIS HITS AVIATION: AIRLINES BEGIN ROUTE CUTS AMID SOARING COSTS

The global aviation industry is beginning to feel the pressure from rising jet fuel prices after the reported disruption in the Strait of Hormuz has tightened oil supplies and shaken energy markets.

With fuel costs climbing sharply, airlines are already adjusting operations, trimming flight schedules and warning passengers of possible disruptions during the peak travel season.

Travel expert Karen Schaler cautioned travellers in a recent social media post that some airlines are cutting thousands of flights and urged early bookings to avoid last-minute disruptions.

Low-cost carriers appear to be the most affected, given their tighter margins and limited flexibility to absorb sudden increases in operational costs. Analysts say these airlines may be forced into deeper route cuts if fuel prices remain elevated.

Some airlines have already begun scaling back. Air Transat has reduced part of its summer schedule, while AirAsia X has announced further cuts and fare increases. In Europe, Lufthansa has reportedly reduced thousands of flights, with other carriers like Air France-KLM and Volotea also adjusting their schedules.

Industry executives say these changes are partly seasonal, but rising fuel prices are accelerating the scale of adjustments. As one aviation analyst noted, airlines are now being forced to decide which routes remain viable under the new cost pressures.

For passengers, the impact could be significant. Experts warn of fewer available seats, higher ticket prices, and possible cancellations, especially during the busy summer travel period.

While some airlines hedged fuel prices in advance and may feel less immediate pressure, others are already moving quickly to protect profitability in what could become a challenging period for global air travel.
