POWER PLAY 2027: TINUBU BACKS HAMZAT AS LAGOS APC SUCCESSION BATTLE IGNITES

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly endorsed the decision of the Lagos State Governance Advisory Council (GAC) to adopt Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as its consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election.

The development points to an emerging political alignment within the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as preparations for the next election cycle begin to take shape.

On Wednesday, President Tinubu met behind closed doors with members of the GAC, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and Deputy Governor Hamzat at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The meeting, which started around 2:30 p.m., also had in attendance key APC stakeholders from Lagos State.

Although official details of the meeting have not yet been released, sources say it formed part of ongoing consultations around succession plans and internal party cohesion ahead of 2027.

The endorsement comes shortly after the GAC, widely regarded as the highest advisory body of the APC in Lagos, backed Hamzat as its preferred consensus candidate following internal deliberations and consultations within the party structure.

Earlier in the week, Governor Sanwo-Olu had also publicly indicated support for Hamzat, describing him as his preferred successor during a closed-door session at Lagos House, Marina. At the meeting, Hamzat reportedly expressed his readiness to contest the governorship seat, with top government officials and party leaders in attendance.

With these developments, political activities within Lagos APC are expected to intensify in the coming months as stakeholders continue to consolidate support ahead of the 2027 governorship race.
