OGUN EAST POWER PLAY: GBENGA DANIEL VS DAPO ABIODUN

This week, political attention shifted to Abuja as Senator Gbenga Daniel, who represents Ogun East in the National Assembly, formally picked up his nomination and expression of interest forms at the national secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking after obtaining the forms, Daniel said he is seeking a return to the Senate in 2027, describing it as part of his continued commitment to the people of Ogun East.

“Today, I picked up my nomination and expression of interest forms as I seek to return to the Nigerian Senate,” he said. “It is about continuing to provide effective and responsive representation for the people of Ogun East Senatorial District under the platform of the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.”

His move, however, comes against the backdrop of growing political realignment within the district. Just days before his declaration, key APC stakeholders in Ogun East had publicly endorsed Governor Dapo Abiodun for the senatorial seat, signalling a possible consensus arrangement within the party structure.

Party insiders note that the APC constitution allows state chapters to adopt consensus positions where necessary, a process already used in selecting the party’s governorship candidate in Ogun State ahead of the 2027 elections.

The unfolding situation has therefore set the stage for a politically sensitive period in Ogun East, as party leaders balance internal agreements with individual ambitions ahead of the primaries.
