The chapter, which was registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission in January, was formally launched during an Alumni and Stakeholders Reception held in the capital city, bringing together graduates, partners, and other stakeholders.

Speaking at the event, the Director of the Future Students Office at the University of Leicester, Phil Dalby, praised Nigerian alumni for their continued impact globally and said they remain a vital part of the institution’s legacy.

He noted that former students had gone on to excel in various fields, including public service, business, and community leadership, describing them as “agents of change” with the capacity to influence development in their home country.

Dalby also revealed the university’s ambition to raise a £100 million campaign as it moves into its next century, encouraging Nigerian alumni to support the institution’s long-term vision while strengthening global engagement.

Coordinator of the reception, Zainab Mai-Bornu, highlighted the importance of alumni in maintaining the university’s global reputation, stressing that graduates are expected to reflect the values of discipline, dedication, and integrity in their various environments.

The event also featured contributions from notable Nigerian alumni. The Director-General of the National Space Research and Development Agency, Mathew Adepoju, said his time at the University of Leicester shaped his professional standards and encouraged him to pursue problem-solving approaches in his career.

He also urged younger graduates to remain focused and resilient despite challenges in Nigeria’s working environment.

Similarly, a senior naval officer, Commodore Abdulhakeem Oyebode, credited his academic background from the institution for opening professional opportunities and helping him achieve career success.

A panel discussion at the event further explored how alumni networks could be better utilised to support both individual growth and broader national development goals.

The launch reflects a growing emphasis on diaspora and alumni engagement as a tool for strengthening innovation, education, and governance in Nigeria.
