Vice President Kashim Shettima has urged Nigerian Muslim pilgrims embarking on the 2026 Hajj to uphold strong national values and serve as worthy ambassadors of the country throughout their spiritual journey.
He made the appeal during the official flag-off of the 2026 Hajj airlift at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, where he emphasized safety, discipline, and effective coordination in the pilgrimage process.

Shettima noted that pilgrims represent Nigeria on a global stage and must therefore reflect qualities such as humility, patience, integrity, and respect for the laws of the host nation.
The inaugural flight saw about 500 pilgrims from Kogi State depart for Saudi Arabia, with a total of around 50,000 Nigerian pilgrims expected to participate in the exercise.
He described the Hajj as both a spiritual obligation and a national responsibility, stressing that government institutions must ensure a smooth and dignified experience for all participants.

According to him, President Bola Tinubu’s administration remains committed to safeguarding Nigerians both locally and abroad, while reinforcing accountability in governance and public service delivery.
Shettima also called on aviation authorities, Hajj officials, medical teams, and security agencies to maintain high standards of coordination, adding that success would be measured not just by flights but by the comfort and welfare of pilgrims.
Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo encouraged pilgrims to use the opportunity for deep spiritual reflection and to pray for peace, stability, and economic progress in Nigeria.

He also urged prayers for national leaders as they continue implementing reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure, expressed appreciation for federal support in strengthening coordination for the Hajj operation, while assuring smooth facilitation for pilgrims.

The Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, represented by Captain Mamud Abdullahi, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring safe and comfortable air transport for all pilgrims.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Ismail Abba Yusuf, assured that ongoing reforms under the current administration are aimed at improving transparency and enhancing pilgrims’ welfare.
