Islamist militants linked to Boko Haram have launched an attack on a military base in Chad’s Lake Chad region, leaving at least 23 security personnel dead and 26 others injured, according to a statement from the Chadian army.

The army confirmed that the attack occurred on Monday night and said government forces were able to repel the militants after a fierce exchange of fire. It added that ongoing military operations are currently underway to clear the area and secure the region.
The Lake Chad basin, which spans parts of Nigeria, Chad, Niger, and Cameroon, has remained a hotspot for insurgent activity for years, with Boko Haram extending its operations from northeastern Nigeria into neighbouring countries.

Chadian authorities said the latest assault targeted a military base in Barka Tolorom, within the Lake Chad province, an area that has repeatedly experienced attacks on security installations.

President Mahamat Idriss Deby condemned the attack, describing it as a cowardly act carried out by what he called a terrorist group. He paid tribute to the fallen soldiers, describing them as heroes who sacrificed their lives to protect the nation, and extended condolences to their families while wishing the injured a speedy recovery.

He also reaffirmed Chad’s commitment to intensifying the fight against insurgency, insisting that the country would remain resolute in defending its territory and citizens against extremist threats.
Security forces continue to carry out clearance operations in the affected area as part of ongoing efforts to curb militant activities in the Lake Chad region, which has seen repeated violence in recent years.
