GHANAIAN LAWMAKER ARRESTED IN NETHERLANDS OVER ALLEGED $32M ROMANCE SCAM, MONEY LAUNDERING SCHEME

Authorities in Ghana are seeking clarification over the detention of Ghanaian lawmaker Kwame Ohene Frimpong amid allegations linking him to a US$32 million fraud and money laundering investigation reportedly connected to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The Asante Akyem North Member of Parliament was reportedly arrested over the weekend at Schiphol Airport during a trip abroad, according to reports by GhanaWeb.

Sources within Ghana’s law enforcement agencies reportedly told GhanaWeb that the first-time legislator is under investigation over alleged financial crimes, including money laundering and suspected romance scams involving an estimated US$32 million.

According to the reports, investigations into the allegations have allegedly been ongoing for more than a year.

Meanwhile, the Parliament of Ghana confirmed the detention in a statement issued by the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Djietror.

The statement noted that parliamentary leadership had begun engagements with Ghana’s diplomatic mission in the Netherlands to obtain more details regarding the incident.

“Parliament has become aware that the Member of Parliament for the Asante Akyem North constituency was detained at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam,” the statement said.

Djietror further stated that the Speaker of Parliament and the leadership of the House were in contact with Ghana’s mission in The Hague for additional information on the matter.

He also assured that parliament would continue to update the public as more details emerge.

The precise circumstances surrounding the detention remain unclear at the time of reporting, but the development has renewed scrutiny over previous allegations connected to the lawmaker.

In an earlier statement issued on October 27, 2025, an aide to Frimpong denied accusations linking him to fraudulent activities.

The statement claimed that certain individuals were allegedly using the MP’s name to defraud people through a supposed travel and visa programme.

The letter, signed by lawyer Elvis Adu-Ameyaw, rejected the allegations against the lawmaker.

Frimpong was formerly a member of the New Patriotic Party before leaving the party to contest the 2024 parliamentary election as an independent candidate in the Asante Akyem North constituency in Ghana’s Ashanti Region.

He later secured a decisive victory, polling 26,926 votes to defeat the NPP candidate, Andy Appiah Kubi, who scored 8,933 votes, while the National Democratic Congress candidate, Kofi Asamoah, received 2,469 votes.
