ATIKU PRESSES FOR EL-RUFAI’S FREEDOM AHEAD OF EID, CONDEMNS CONTINUED DETENTION

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged federal and Kaduna State authorities to immediately release former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, describing his continued detention ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations as unjust and politically motivated.

In a statement issued through his media aide, Atiku condemned the situation, arguing that it violates civil liberties, democratic principles, and the rule of law.

He stated that it was unacceptable for any government to detain a citizen without clear justification, especially during a significant religious period marked by reflection, mercy, and family unity.

Atiku further warned against the use of state institutions to target political opponents, stressing that democracy must be measured by how fairly all citizens are treated regardless of political affiliation.

He called for transparency from authorities regarding the legal process surrounding El-Rufai’s detention, insisting that due process must be clearly demonstrated to the public.

El-Rufai is currently facing trial alongside a co-defendant over allegations including money laundering, conversion of proceeds of corruption, and other financial offences before the Federal High Court in Kaduna.

The case is part of ongoing legal proceedings in which both defendants have pleaded not guilty.

Atiku maintained that selective justice undermines public confidence in governance and urged authorities to act in the interest of national unity and fairness.
