XI GIVES PUTIN GRAND WELCOME BUT RUSSIA LEAVES CHINA WITHOUT PIPELINE BREAKTHROUGH

Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping displayed strong diplomatic symbolism and friendly rhetoric during a high-profile meeting in Beijing, as both leaders reaffirmed their growing strategic relationship amid shifting global power dynamics.

The two leaders were seen walking the red carpet into the Great Hall of the People, where a Chinese military band played the Russian classic “Moscow Nights”, setting a symbolic tone for the visit. During their exchange, both leaders referred to each other in warm terms, with Putin calling Xi a “dear friend” and Xi responding by describing Putin as an “old friend.”

The meeting highlighted the long-standing diplomatic relationship between China and Russia, with both leaders having met more than 40 times over the years. Their discussions focused on strengthening “strategic cooperation,” mutual trust, and expanding partnership ties across multiple sectors.

Both sides also used the occasion to criticise aspects of United States foreign and security policy, including nuclear strategy and proposed missile defence initiatives, signalling shared geopolitical positions on key global issues.

However, despite the public display of unity, the summit also revealed underlying limits in the relationship. One key issue was the proposed Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline, which Russia has been eager to advance to expand energy exports to China. While discussions showed some progress in general terms, no final agreement was reached, with Beijing reportedly cautious over pricing and over-reliance on Russian energy supplies.

Analysts note that while both countries continue to deepen cooperation, their interests do not always fully align, particularly in long-term economic and energy strategies.

Despite such differences, both governments continue to project a message of unity on the global stage, presenting themselves as strategic partners in an increasingly competitive international environment.
