REVEALED: THE 10 HIGHEST-PAID ATHLETES IN THE WORLD FOR 2026

At 41, Cristiano Ronaldo is still proving that age is just a number when it comes to elite sport and global earnings.

The Portuguese superstar has topped Forbes’ list of the world’s highest-paid athletes once again, pulling in an estimated $300 million over the past year before taxes and agent fees. That figure includes about $235 million from his massive contract with Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, along with roughly $65 million from endorsements, business deals, appearances, and licensing.

This latest achievement marks the fourth consecutive year—and the sixth time overall—that Ronaldo has led the rankings. Remarkably, it also ties him with Michael Jordan for the most times at No. 1, behind only Tiger Woods, who has topped the list 11 times.

Ronaldo’s journey across football’s biggest clubs—from Real Madrid to Juventus, Manchester United, and now Al-Nassr—has not only extended his playing career but also boosted his commercial value to unprecedented levels. His current earnings match the highest single-year total ever recorded by Forbes for an active athlete, previously set by boxer Floyd Mayweather in 2015.

But Ronaldo isn’t alone at the top of the financial mountain.

This year’s top ten highest-paid athletes collectively earned around $1.4 billion over the last 12 months. Alongside Ronaldo, big names like Lionel Messi, LeBron James, Lewis Hamilton, Shohei Ohtani, and Canelo Álvarez all posted career-high or near-record earnings.

Shohei Ohtani stood out with more than $127 million, driven largely by endorsements, while Canelo Álvarez and LeBron James also crossed the $130 million mark. Lewis Hamilton added another $100 million year, boosted by his move to Ferrari.

The overall trend shows a clear shift in modern sport: athletes are now earning just as much—if not more—off the field than on it. Sponsorships, brand deals, and global partnerships contributed more than $500 million to the top ten alone.

A notable driver of this surge continues to be Saudi Arabia’s heavy investment in sports. Ronaldo’s move to the Saudi Pro League in 2023 alone tripled his playing income, while other stars like Karim Benzema and Jon Rahm have also benefited from Middle Eastern-backed deals.

However, despite recent reports suggesting a pullback in funding from Saudi sports projects like LIV Golf, the influence of Middle Eastern money in global sports remains significant.

For now, Ronaldo remains at the very top—both in football and in finance—showing no signs of slowing down as he edges closer to 1,000 career goals and continues to dominate the global sporting economy.
