Police Warn Against Reprisal Attacks Over Xenophobic Incidents in South Africa
The Nigeria Police Force has urged Nigerians to remain calm and law-abiding following reports of xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa, warning against any form of reprisal violence within the country.
The warning comes amid rising public concern and tension over the reported attacks, with fears that such incidents could trigger retaliatory actions against South African nationals and interests in Nigeria.
In a statement, the Force said the situation was reviewed during a Joint Intelligence Board Meeting held on May 18, 2026, chaired by the National Security Adviser, where security and intelligence agencies assessed the implications and coordinated response strategies.
According to the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, the Federal Government is already engaging relevant stakeholders through diplomatic and security channels to ensure a peaceful resolution and protect Nigerians both at home and abroad.

The police assured citizens that there is no need for panic, noting that measures have been put in place to maintain order and prevent any breakdown of law and order.
While acknowledging the concerns of Nigerians over the attacks, the Force strongly cautioned against self-help, stressing that no individual or group has the right to take the law into their own hands.
It warned that any attempt to attack South African nationals, businesses, diplomatic missions, or property in Nigeria would be treated as a criminal offence and dealt with according to the law.
The statement also urged citizens to avoid spreading unverified or inflammatory information, especially on social media, noting that such actions could escalate tensions and disrupt ongoing diplomatic efforts.
To prevent any security breaches, the police said surveillance has been increased around critical national infrastructure, foreign missions, and strategic locations across the country, with adequate personnel deployed to protect lives and property.
Reaffirming its commitment to peace and stability, the Nigeria Police Force called on Nigerians to remain calm, vigilant, and continue their daily activities without fear, assuring that government institutions are actively working to manage the situation responsibly.
