A soldier has been killed and another injured during a violent attack by suspected kidnappers in the Magbon-Etido area of Mowe, Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Monday when armed men stormed the community in what witnesses described as a coordinated operation targeting a man believed to be a sand miner.
Sources said the attackers attempted to abduct their target, prompting a response from security personnel who were attached to the individual. A gun battle allegedly broke out between the operatives and the assailants, during which one soldier was fatally shot while another sustained injuries.

Residents described the attack as sudden and chaotic, with reports of gunfire causing panic in the area. A video shared online showed a vehicle carrying what appeared to be the body of a soldier, sparking widespread concern and speculation about the nature of the incident.
While initial reports suggested the presence of bandits, security sources later clarified that the attack was linked to a kidnapping attempt rather than banditry activity. Community accounts also supported the claim that the incident involved kidnappers targeting a specific individual.

A community representative further stated that the soldier who died was part of a security detail attached to the sand miner, and that another operative was injured during the exchange of fire. He urged residents to disregard rumours of a broader bandit invasion, describing the situation as a criminal attack that has already attracted a joint security response.

The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the incident, noting that one soldier was killed and another injured. Authorities added that preliminary investigations do not indicate any connection to organized banditry in the state.
Security agencies have since launched coordinated operations in the area to track down those responsible, while assuring residents that the situation is under control and that security has been reinforced.
