BREAKING: GENERAL RABE’S WIFE SHOT BY BANDITS, RESCUED ALIVE BY NIGERIAN ARMY IN FIERCE GUN BATTLE

The Nigerian Army has recorded another major breakthrough in the fight against banditry with the successful rescue of Mrs. Abubakar, wife of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, after she was shot by fleeing bandits during a fierce encounter with troops in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The rescue operation, conducted by troops of Operation FANSAN YANMA under the ongoing Operation CLEAN SWEEP III, followed intelligence-driven efforts launched after the abduction of the retired senior military officer and members of his family.

Military sources disclosed that troops on a search-and-rescue mission made contact with the bandits around Tunga village in Matazu LGA. The encounter quickly escalated into a gun battle as troops closed in on the criminals.

Unable to withstand the superior firepower of the advancing soldiers, the bandits reportedly shot Mrs. Abubakar before abandoning her and fleeing into surrounding areas.

“We have rescued Mrs. Abubakar. She is bleeding. We have administered first aid and are currently moving her for urgent medical attention,” a military source said.

The rescued victim was immediately stabilised by military personnel before being evacuated to a medical facility for further treatment.

The operation marks another significant success in Nigeria’s increasingly intelligence-driven campaign against terrorism and banditry, particularly in the North-West, where criminal groups have turned kidnapping into a multi-billion-naira enterprise.

According to available data from the National Bureau of Statistics and independent conflict monitoring organisations, over 2.2 million Nigerians paid an estimated ₦2.23 trillion in ransom between May 2023 and April 2024, while thousands of citizens have either been killed, displaced or abducted across several states. Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kaduna and parts of Niger State have remained among the worst affected areas.

Security experts note that rescue operations involving hostages are among the most complex military assignments because bandits often use captives as human shields and frequently relocate victims between camps to frustrate rescue efforts.

Globally, countries such as Colombia, Mexico and the Philippines have adopted intelligence-driven operations, technological surveillance and sustained military pressure to degrade criminal networks and rescue victims. Analysts say Nigeria’s recent approach increasingly reflects these modern counter-insurgency and counter-banditry strategies.

The successful rescue of Mrs. Abubakar demonstrates the importance of actionable intelligence and rapid military response in dealing with non-state armed groups. It also highlights the dangers troops face during rescue missions, where split-second decisions often determine the difference between life and death.

Following the operation, troops have intensified clearance operations across Matazu and neighbouring communities in pursuit of the fleeing bandits and their suspected collaborators.

Military authorities said the offensive would continue until all criminal enclaves, hideouts and logistics bases in the area are dismantled. Efforts are also ongoing to apprehend those responsible for the attack and bring them to justice.

The Nigerian Army reiterated its commitment to protecting citizens and ensuring that perpetrators of violent crimes are decisively dealt with.

The rescue of Mrs. Abubakar comes amid renewed calls for enhanced aerial surveillance, increased deployment of drones, stronger intelligence networks, improved synergy among security agencies and active community participation in providing information to security forces.

While the successful operation brings hope to countless families whose loved ones remain in captivity, it also underscores the fact that the war against banditry is far from over.

Military victories may rescue individuals, but lasting peace will require sustained pressure on criminal networks, better border management, disruption of arms supply routes, improved socio-economic conditions and greater cooperation between citizens and security agencies.

For the family of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, the rescue offers a moment of relief amid tragedy. For Nigeria, it is another reminder that despite the brutality of criminal gangs, courage, intelligence and persistence remain powerful weapons against terror.

As troops continue their pursuit of the fleeing bandits, the message from the battlefield is unmistakable: there will be no safe haven for those who prey on innocent Nigerians.
