The Federal Government has officially launched Nigeria’s Digital Switch Over (DSO) platform, a major initiative designed to modernise the broadcasting sector, expand digital access and create new economic opportunities for industry stakeholders.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony in Abuja, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described the project as a significant step forward for the country’s media and communications landscape.

According to the minister, the full implementation of the DSO programme is expected to generate employment, support local manufacturing, boost content production and provide broadcasters and content creators with additional sources of revenue.
He explained that the initiative goes beyond a simple technological upgrade, representing a broader effort to strengthen Nigeria’s digital economy and improve the nation’s communications infrastructure.

Idris noted that extensive consultations had been held with key stakeholders across the broadcasting industry, including content producers, signal distributors, manufacturers, regulatory bodies and technology providers. He said participants expressed strong support for the successful rollout of the programme.
Addressing concerns about the future of traditional broadcasting, the minister clarified that the government is adopting a hybrid broadcasting model that combines digital terrestrial television, satellite broadcasting and digital streaming platforms. He emphasized that the objective is to expand access rather than replace existing technologies.

The government also reaffirmed its commitment to encouraging indigenous innovation and creating opportunities for Nigerian businesses, technology developers and workers through the DSO initiative.
Also speaking at the event, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, described the project as an important milestone in Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda. He revealed plans to expand the country’s digital infrastructure through the deployment of extensive fibre-optic networks and the launch of additional satellites to improve connectivity nationwide.

The Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission, Charles Ebuebu, said the platform would enhance access to information, education and digital opportunities while helping to reposition Nigeria’s television industry for future growth.
Similarly, the leadership of NIGCOMSAT highlighted the platform’s potential to bridge connectivity gaps, strengthen the creative economy and provide greater opportunities for content creators, broadcasters, technology firms and investors.
Officials expressed confidence that the Digital Switch Over programme will accelerate Nigeria’s transition into a more connected and digitally driven economy while opening new possibilities for innovation and economic development.
