The Central Bank of Nigeria has introduced the Naira Ambassadors Club, an initiative designed to encourage young Nigerians to value and properly handle the nation’s currency.
Speaking during the launch of the programme for secondary school students in the Federal Capital Territory, the CBN Governor emphasized that the Naira represents far more than a means of payment. He noted that it serves as Nigeria’s legal tender, supports economic activities, promotes savings and investment, and reflects the country’s identity and sovereignty.

He explained that every banknote carries important national symbols, images of notable Nigerians, and security features that help maintain public trust in the monetary system. According to him, preserving the integrity of the Naira is a responsibility shared by all citizens.
The governor highlighted the significant resources invested in producing durable and secure banknotes, warning that improper handling, mutilation, and defacement of the currency lead to faster deterioration. He said such practices increase replacement expenses, affect the smooth circulation of money, and place unnecessary financial pressure on the country.

He further stressed that protecting the Naira goes beyond the responsibilities of the Central Bank and should be viewed as a national obligation.
Also speaking at the event, a senior CBN official described the initiative as part of the bank’s ongoing efforts to safeguard one of Nigeria’s most valuable national assets. She noted that a country’s currency symbolizes economic stability, public confidence, and national pride.
She expressed concern over common practices such as writing on banknotes, stapling them, spraying them during celebrations, and other forms of misuse, saying these actions shorten the lifespan of the currency and undermine its importance.

According to her, lasting change can only be achieved through education and awareness. She explained that the programme aims to equip young Nigerians with the knowledge and values needed to promote proper currency handling within their schools, homes, and communities.
Another CBN official stated that protecting the Naira is a collective civic responsibility and revealed plans to extend the campaign across the country to discourage currency abuse and encourage greater respect for the national currency.
