A video making rounds on social media has captured armed bandits displaying large amounts of cash reportedly obtained from ransom payments, raising renewed concerns about the growing challenge of kidnapping and insecurity across Nigeria.
The footage was shared by conflict and security journalist Bakatsine, who posted the clip on his X account alongside a message expressing concern over the continued impact of banditry on affected communities.
According to him, the video allegedly shows bandits openly displaying money believed to have been collected from victims’ families and associates as ransom for kidnapped individuals.
The development has reignited public debate about the rising profitability of kidnapping-for-ransom operations, particularly in parts of the North-West and North-Central regions where armed groups have carried out numerous abductions in recent years.
Security experts have repeatedly warned that ransom payments provide criminal groups with financial resources that can be used to acquire weapons, recruit new members and expand their operations.
