FEC approves major NYSC reform after 53 years

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a wide-ranging reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), marking the scheme’s first major restructuring since it was established 53 years ago.

The development was announced by the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, after the FEC meeting held at the Presidential Villa on Monday.

According to the minister, the approved reform will involve a comprehensive review of the NYSC to ensure it reflects the country’s current realities and developmental priorities.

Established in 1973 to foster national unity following the Nigerian civil war, the NYSC has for decades brought together graduates from different parts of the country to encourage unity and integration.

Olawande noted that changing national needs have made it necessary to review the scheme’s objectives and operations to better serve young Nigerians.

One of the major changes approved is the appointment of a civilian to lead the NYSC, while the military will continue to provide security support for corps members nationwide.

The Federal Government said the reforms are designed to transform the scheme into a productivity-focused institution that will equip participants with practical skills and contribute to the country’s economic growth.

It added that the revamped NYSC is expected to become a skills-driven platform that supports the administration’s goal of building a one-trillion-dollar economy.
