The Federal Government has reaffirmed its support for the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) in its plan to develop the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology into a world-class specialised institution.

The commitment was restated by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, during a strategic meeting with the PTDF Executive Secretary, Prof. Shuaibu Shehu Aliyu, as well as senior officials from the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

The meeting focused on implementing key priorities following the recent presidential approval to rename the institution.
During the meeting, Prof. Aliyu disclosed that the university has already inaugurated its Board of Trustees and Governing Council and has commenced academic activities, including a split-site PhD programme.
The Minister explained that the institution will operate as a government-owned private university and confirmed that it will be listed on the JAMB admissions portal once all necessary documentation has been completed.

He also encouraged stronger international partnerships, sustainable governance structures, and increased collaboration with industry stakeholders to position the university as a globally competitive centre for teaching, research, and innovation.
The university is expected to serve Nigeria and the wider African continent by advancing education and research in petroleum, energy, geological sciences, engineering, and related fields, while supporting the development of a highly skilled workforce for the future energy sector.
