President Bola Tinubu has expressed optimism about the possibility of a future visit to Nigeria by Pope Leo XIV, saying such a visit would strengthen global efforts toward peace and spiritual leadership.
Tinubu made the remarks while receiving Archbishop Paul R. Gallagher, the Holy See’s Secretary for Relations with States and International Organisations, during a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

According to a statement from the Presidency, the visit coincided with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the Vatican, a milestone both sides described as significant in strengthening bilateral and religious ties.
The President said he had followed the Pope’s global engagements promoting peace and noted that millions around the world look up to the Catholic leader for moral and spiritual guidance. He added that Nigeria would welcome the Pope at an appropriate time.

Tinubu also highlighted his long-standing relationship with the Catholic Church, recalling his tenure as Governor of Lagos State when he supported the return of mission schools to religious bodies after years of government control.
He further urged Catholic leaders and bishops to continue promoting peace, tolerance, and unity across religious divides in Nigeria, stressing the importance of interfaith harmony.

On security, the President stated that ongoing challenges in the country were not rooted in religion, pointing instead to broader criminal and socio-political factors. He also emphasized government efforts to strengthen military operations, improve surveillance, and invest in youth empowerment to reduce vulnerability to extremism.
Archbishop Gallagher, representing the Vatican, conveyed the Pope’s appreciation for Nigeria’s support and Tinubu’s presence at his inauguration. He described Nigeria as a key nation for the Catholic Church in Africa and commended ongoing efforts to promote peace and development.

He also acknowledged the growth of Catholic institutions in Nigeria, including educational establishments, and praised cooperation between the Nigerian government and the Holy See over the years.
The Vatican delegation included senior church officials who reiterated the importance of continued diplomatic and religious collaboration between both sides.
