According to the President, Buhari’s journey from military ruler to democratically elected leader made him one of the most remarkable figures in Nigeria’s political history. He noted that the former president remained committed to national service throughout his life and consistently demonstrated courage, conviction and dedication to the country.

Tinubu said Buhari’s legacy extended far beyond the positions he occupied, describing him as a leader whose personal conduct reflected the principles he publicly preached.

Reflecting on their political partnership, the President said they shared a common vision of building a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria. He added that Buhari’s transition from military leadership to becoming a committed democrat symbolised his belief in constitutional governance and national development.

The President also observed that Buhari continued to enjoy the trust and admiration of many Nigerians even after leaving office, describing such enduring public confidence as a rare achievement earned through years of integrity, discipline and consistency.

He encouraged Buhari’s family, political associates and supporters to preserve his legacy by embracing the values he stood for and applying them in both public service and personal life.

Tinubu stressed that the greatest tribute Nigerians could pay the late leader was to uphold the ideals of patriotism, accountability and responsible leadership that defined his career.

He also assured former First Lady Aisha Buhari and members of the Buhari family of the Federal Government’s continued support while praying for Allah to grant the late former president eternal rest in Aljannah Firdaus.

Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd.), recalled the overwhelming respect shown to Buhari during his burial, saying it reflected the admiration he commanded both within Nigeria and internationally.

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum described the event as an opportunity to reflect on Buhari’s exemplary leadership, dedication to public service and values, which continue to influence governance in Borno State and beyond.

He added that the most meaningful honour for the late president would be sustained prayers for the repose of his soul and a commitment to preserving the principles he lived by.

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, said the gathering served as a reminder of Buhari’s lifelong dedication to the nation and announced plans by his family and associates to establish a foundation in his honour to preserve his legacy.

Representing the Katsina State Government, Deputy Governor Farouk Jobe expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for the support extended to the Buhari family and the state following the former president’s death. He also urged Nigerians to remain committed to democracy, good governance and peaceful coexistence.

The event featured tributes from Buhari’s former aides, friends and associates, while special prayers for the late leader were led by religious leaders, including Archbishop Emeritus John Cardinal Onaiyekan and the Imam of the National Mosque, Sheikh Abdulkadir Sholagberu.

The ceremony concluded with the presentation of a book of tributes by Vice President Kashim Shettima in honour of the late former president.
