LAGOS GOVT THREATENS TO SUE X USER OVER ALLEGED FALSE FLOOD VIDEO

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to take legal action against an X user, identified as Enugu Loudmouth (@Jamessucre2), over an alleged misleading flood video that was wrongly presented as being from Lagos.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the decision in posts shared on X, stating that deleting the post would not prevent further legal steps against the user.

Wahab said that while the government recognises citizens’ right to freedom of expression, such rights must be exercised responsibly and within the limits of the law.

He accused the user of spreading false information that could mislead the public and weaken genuine conversations about environmental challenges facing Lagos residents.

According to the commissioner, the flood video shared by the account was not recorded in Lagos but originated from Bangladesh.

He urged social media users to verify the authenticity and source of content before sharing it, warning that false information can create confusion and damage public trust.

The commissioner did not reveal the specific legal measures being considered or when the action would commence.

The development follows recent concerns raised by the Lagos State Government over the circulation of what it described as fake flood images and videos allegedly being shared by some bloggers and social media influencers to portray incidents from other locations as events in Lagos.

Wahab had earlier accused some online users of spreading misleading content for engagement and online attention, saying such actions could undermine efforts to address genuine environmental issues.

The latest warning comes after heavy rainfall caused flooding in parts of Lagos, affecting transportation and contributing to power disruptions in some communities. The government has continued to advise residents and online publishers to confirm information before sharing it.
