The Oyo State Government has honoured civilians and security personnel who lost their lives during the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, describing them as heroes whose sacrifices will never be forgotten.
The state also pledged continued support for the families of the deceased as they mourn their loved ones.
In a memorial message shared on its official X account on Wednesday, the government expressed gratitude over the safe rescue of the kidnapped pupils and teachers but acknowledged that the loss of lives during the incident remains a painful reminder of the tragedy.
It extended heartfelt condolences to the affected families, assuring them of the government’s commitment to standing by them during this difficult period.
An “In Memoriam” list released by the government named several civilians and security personnel who died in connection with the Ahoro-Esinle and Yawota abduction incident.
The civilians honoured include Michael Oyedokun, John Olaleye, Joel Adesiyan and Oluwasegun Akanni.
Among the security personnel remembered were Lieutenant F. A. Isaac, Adigun Saibu, Isa Saliu, Rafiu Ayuba and an unidentified soldier.
The pupils and teachers were abducted during coordinated attacks on schools in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15 and spent about 57 days in captivity before being rescued through a security operation.
Their release brought relief to their families, schools and communities after weeks of uncertainty.
The government noted that two teachers, Michael Oyedokun and Esiyan Adegboye, lost their lives during the incident. While Adegboye was laid to rest after his body was recovered, Oyedokun’s remains are yet to be found despite ongoing efforts.
The state government reaffirmed its sympathy for the bereaved families and prayed for the peaceful repose of those who died in the line of duty and during the tragic incident.
