Workers at the Federal Education on Wednesday morning blocked the entrance to the ministry’s headquarters in protest against Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, and other issues affecting the ministry.
The workers reportedly prevented Alausa and the Acting Permanent Secretary, Dr Folake Olatunji-David, from gaining access to their offices when they arrived at the premises.
A video circulating on X showed a large number of workers gathered at the entrance of the ministry as a motorcade believed to be conveying the minister approached the building.
The protesters could be heard chanting, “Alausa must go,” while refusing to allow the officials into the premises.
The workers also protested against the proposed concession of King’s College, Lagos, chanting, “We say no to concession of King’s College. King’s College is not for sale.”
The protest is linked to an ongoing disagreement between ministry workers’ unions and the Federal Government over the reported plan to concession the institution to its old boys’ association for 35 years.
The unions have previously called for Alausa’s removal and opposed the proposed concession, arguing that King’s College should not be handed over under the arrangement being considered.
Beyond the King’s College issue, the workers have also raised concerns about staff welfare, administrative practices and other matters within the ministry.
The latest protest has further heightened tensions between the ministry’s management and the workers’ unions as efforts to resolve the disagreements continue.
