Canada Tightens Financial Checks for International Student Visa Applicants
Canada has introduced stricter financial screening measures for international students applying for study permits, with immigration officers now required to take a closer look at both the amount of money applicants present and the source of those funds.
The updated guidelines from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), shared by Canadavisa on Friday, instruct officers to verify whether applicants have genuine and dependable financial support throughout their studies.
Under the new rules, officers must assess the source of funds in every application, meaning students may face more detailed reviews of their financial history before their study permits are approved.
The revised guidance also states that immigration officials may request additional personal, family, financial and employment documents where necessary to confirm that applicants can comfortably support themselves for the duration of their studies.
Unlike the previous system, where deeper financial checks were often associated with applicants from high-risk environments, the new approach allows officers to request further evidence based on the specific details of each application.
Applicants may now be required to submit longer financial records, including up to six months of bank statements, compared with the previous requirement of four months. Statements from the month of application or the month before submission may also be requested.
The updated guidelines have also expanded the types of financial evidence applicants can use. Students may now provide proof of income from sources such as pensions and rental properties to demonstrate their ability to fund their education in Canada.
However, the required amount of money applicants must show has not changed. International students are still expected to prove they can cover tuition fees, travel expenses and living costs.
For a single student applying outside Quebec under the regular study permit stream, the required living expense amount remains CAD $22,895.
The tighter financial checks come as Canada continues efforts to improve monitoring of its international student programme amid concerns over compliance and the resources available to investigate possible violations.
With the new process, applicants will need to provide clearer and more consistent proof of their financial situation, as immigration authorities place greater emphasis on financial transparency when determining whether a student is genuinely prepared for life and studies in Canada.
