The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has expressed its readiness to support the establishment of state police if the proposed reform receives approval, stressing that professionalism, accountability and effective service delivery will remain key priorities under the new policing structure.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun stated this while opening a one-day sensitisation workshop on state police organised by the Nigeria Institute of Police Studies (NIPS).
The IGP said the workshop was designed to equip police officers with the necessary knowledge and understanding to contribute meaningfully to discussions surrounding state police and prepare them for possible changes in the country’s policing system.
He urged participants to take full advantage of the training and share the knowledge gained with officers in their various commands and formations, ensuring that the entire Force has a clear understanding of the proposed reforms.
Earlier, the Director-General of NIPS, Professor Olu Ogunshakin, commended the IGP for setting up the Nigeria Police Force Steering Committee on State Police.
Ogunshakin revealed that several recommendations from the committee had already been reflected in the proposed State Police Bill, describing it as an important step forward in Nigeria’s ongoing policing reform efforts.
The workshop forms part of the Police Force’s wider strategy to prepare its personnel for emerging reforms, improve operational effectiveness and strengthen public trust in policing.
