The Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA) has sealed Dahua Paper Company Ltd. in Owowo Village, near Abeokuta, for allegedly operating an illegal dumpsite, burning waste in the open and polluting a nearby river.
The enforcement operation was carried out on Tuesday by a team led by OGWAMA Managing Director, Faruk Akintunde, following months of monitoring and intelligence gathering.
Akintunde said the company was found dumping and burning waste at a site opposite its factory, in violation of Ogun State environmental laws. He added that the waste was also being pushed into a river located at the end of the dumpsite.
According to him, the activities could contaminate both surface and underground water. He noted that the affected river serves communities around the area, potentially exposing residents to serious health risks.
Two lorries allegedly used to transport and dump the waste at the illegal site were also found there and confiscated by OGWAMA.
Akintunde said the company would remain sealed while facing legal action. He warned other individuals and organisations against operating illegal dumpsites or engaging in open burning of waste.
He urged offenders to register with OGWAMA and adopt approved waste-disposal methods, stressing that the authorities would continue to enforce environmental regulations across the state.
