Missing Governorship Candidates, Legislative Gaps and Campaign Council Disagreements Raise Serious Questions About Opposition Readiness

Presidential elections are not won through political noise, social media popularity or declarations of ambition. They are won through organisation, nationwide structures, disciplined leadership and the capacity to convert political support into actual votes.

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, serious organisational weaknesses within the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) are raising fundamental questions about its ability to mount a formidable nationwide challenge against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Earlier media reports suggested that the NDC had failed to field governorship candidates in as many as 14 states, representing more than one-third of Nigeria’s 36 states.
However, INEC’s latest published governorship lists identify six states without NDC candidates: Kano, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Ogun, Kebbi and Cross River. These represent six of the 28 states scheduled to conduct governorship elections in 2027.
Importantly, the Supreme Court’s September judgment concerned compliance with political party membership-register requirements. It did not itself publish a revised list increasing the number of affected states from 11 to 14. The discrepancy therefore requires clarification against INEC’s official records.

Nevertheless, the confirmed exclusions represent significant electoral setbacks.
ELECTORAL STRUCTURES CANNOT BE REPLACED BY POPULARITY
Kano and Kaduna are particularly important electoral battlegrounds because of their substantial voting populations and established political networks.
The absence of governorship candidates in these states reduces opportunities for coordinated statewide campaigns, although the NDC retains legislative candidates and other political structures.
Reports have also raised concerns about approximately 140 National Assembly constituencies allegedly lacking NDC candidates. This figure requires reconciliation with INEC’s published constituency lists.

Presidential campaigns depend heavily on governorship, National Assembly and State Assembly candidates to strengthen mobilisation, coordinate grassroots activities and sustain political visibility.
Where these structures are incomplete, presidential candidates face additional organisational burdens.
The implications for the NDC are considerable, particularly when competing against the APC’s established nationwide machinery.
CAMPAIGN COUNCIL CONTROVERSY COMPOUNDS CHALLENGES
The NDC’s organisational difficulties have been compounded by disagreements surrounding its newly constituted 155-member presidential campaign council, with the Obi–Kwankwaso Movement publicly criticising its timing, composition and grassroots preparedness.

The disagreement follows an earlier controversy over a separate campaign council established by the movement, which the NDC leadership rejected.
Such disagreements raise legitimate questions about internal coordination at a critical stage of electoral preparation.
Political ambition without effective organisation cannot guarantee electoral success.
TINUBU’S GROWING STRATEGIC ADVANTAGE
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu enters the 2027 presidential contest with considerable advantages: incumbency, established political alliances, extensive party structures and the APC’s representation across different levels of government.
As a leading presidential contender from the Southwest, Tinubu also occupies an important position in Nigeria’s regional electoral calculations.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, from the Northeast, remains politically relevant. However, his participation could divide opposition votes, potentially strengthening Tinubu’s electoral prospects.

The APC’s extensive network of governors, legislators, local government officials, party executives and grassroots organisers provides significant mobilisation capacity across Nigeria.
This organisational advantage is particularly important in a presidential election requiring broad geographical support.
THE 2027 ELECTORAL REALITY
The NDC’s candidate deficiencies, internal disagreements and organisational challenges present serious obstacles to building a unified electoral campaign.
For President Tinubu, these developments reinforce an already significant structural advantage.

Nevertheless, the APC must consolidate its strongholds, expand its influence in opposition-controlled areas, communicate the administration’s achievements and engage undecided voters.
The opposition’s organisational shortcomings would make President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, backed by the APC’s extensive nationwide political structures, increasingly difficult to defeat in 2027.
The lesson is straightforward: electoral victories require preparation, political discipline, credible candidates and effective nationwide mobilisation.
Popularity may generate political excitement, but organisation delivers electoral results.
